If I recall correctly, the last time we spent a birthday with Andrew was when he turned eighteen years old – even that was a little sketchy and it’s not because we didn’t want to. He’s the baby after all.
Every year H takes a few of his students to the FSU Tri-State Honor Band for four days and I tag along. This involves auditions, concerts to see, rehearsals, workshops, more rehearsals, another huge concert, bus trips back and forth to the hotel, rehearsals, eating meals with friends, more rehearsals and the final concert. There isn’t much time for those kids to much of anything else, except to fall into bed each night exhausted. Andrew’s birthday always falls right in the middle of this musical function.
When he was a high school senior he attended this event and the one time we got to see him on his eighteenth birthday was when he was walking down the sidewalk during his lunch break talking on the phone to his girlfriend, so you see, we didn’t have his complete attention. I think there was a wave and a “Happy Birthday” and he was back on his merry way.
After high school Andrew went off to college and H is still going to FSU with students the week of his birthday. We always miss the Troy Symphony Band Christmas Concert he performs in during that week and his birthday. Missing this special day with him probably bothers us much more than it does him.
Last year he turned twenty-one. I don’t think he minded not spending that milestone birthday with us. 😉 This twenty-second birthday there is another card in the mail and money in the bank. What more could a guy ask for?
H will retire soon. We may be able to spend some time with Andrew on his twenty-forth birthday if I have figured correctly.
