ETIQUETTE IN SOCIAL MEDIA – 4 BLOGGING FACTS I RECENTLY REALIZED KEEPS MY FOLLOWERS HAPPY

When was the last time you tapped on a share button under a post you enjoyed reading? How fast do you respond to comments on your site? Do you follow back or LIKE on Facebook?

  1. I just recently realized how important those share button are at the bottom of each post. You know the ones I’m talking about don’t you? Twitter – Google – Facebook – Pinterest- the list goes on an and on. Comments and likes are great to receive, but if someone shares your content on another site such as these more and more traffic is led to your site. Just tap on that button and Volia! Your tweet or Facebook share or whatever you tapped on is on its way to the source with your site or name attached!
  2. Another important fact is how fast you respond to a comment or like on your site. Yes, we are all busy and time is short. If you are going to put something out there and have comments open, then you should respond to those comments in a timely manner. I would say within 24 hours if possible. It’s the polite thing to do. With today’s technology, most of us have WordPress apps on our phones that allow us to do just that. I’ve commented on articles before, and I do so often I forget on what site and what I’ve commented. Then – SURPRISE – someone comments back to me two weeks or so later and I have to go back to the original article to see what it is I’m being thanked for or what in the world they are talking about. Don’t let this happen to your commenters.
  3. If someone follows you or likes your page on any social media, return the favor. It doesn’t take much time to visit their site, look around some, leave a comment and follow or like a page. Think how much it means to you when you get that new follower on WordPress or Twitter and that LIKE on Facebook. You may actually find a WordPress site or Facebook page that interests you. You will never know until you try.
  4. Visit other sites you follow as often as you can. Don’t sit back and wait for them to come to you. If you fall back from visiting and commenting on other sites, you site could also be less visited. You don’t have to read every post on every site every time one pops up in your reader, but do make an appearance a few times a month at least. The more you comment and like on other sites, the more traffic will flow to yours.  Your Gravatar picture next to any comments or in the like line is there for a reason. I have found many good sites I now follow and have made some good friends by tapping on that Gravatar.

Janice Wald over on Reflections Blog has some great tips about networking and blogging tips that proves my point. It may be worth your while to pay her a visit!

These are just a few facts that make up social media etiquette. It doesn’t take much time to be polite and it may get you more support through social media. Are there any tips you would like to share?

  2. Very good points all and I learned them early on in blogging. It is a matter of reciprocity, courtesy and mutual support. I especially like to give new bloggers a boost and encouragement. Thanks visit my blog.

I need to re-read this often, to keep me on my toes. I’m an eight month old blogger. Having the time of my life, but want to grow more.
Thank you so much for the advice!

  4. I treat social media socially. If someone calls me I always return the call so when someone visits my blog I always visit theirs. I always try to return comments within 24-hours too. I really enjoy reading blog posts and have made the most amazing friends. It is a wonderfully supportive community if you are supportive.

  5. All four of these tips are helpful. Taking time to read what other people have written seems to be one of the axioms of social media courtesy. Commenting validates people. Thank you, by the way, for featuring my Coff Drops post, Elle. I plan to start featuring my community members soon, once I figure out how to do it properly. 🙂

Some of my readers have expressed that my ideas seem unorthodox. For example, my advice about visiting sites of bloggers that visited you. Since Elle Knowles has echoed the same sentiments, I am sharing her post.
Welcome to my brand new series–Reblog Thursday. I have decided to reblog on Thursday in order to spend more time networking with my readers.

It really doesn’t hurt to follow this advice. If I may, I’d like tos share with all a small incident (albeit unrelated to this), which brought a glow inside me. I was at a railway inquiry queue. In my part of town cutting the line is norm. Infact so is breaking the simple rules and regulation. It took me like, maybe, 10 minutes to get to counter. A young fellow was looking to cut the line. I merely politely advised him to get in queue, assuring him it doesn’t take much time. The lady behind the counter quite appreciated my effort (though she gave him a earful 😦 ). I’m glad I was able to share something positive with 2 different people, on different levels though. To sum it up one good turn begets another. Just take an initiative. You never know what may magically happen. 🙂
    Peace to All, Indraneel

  13. I am a terrible blogger. My comments and posts are catch as catch can at the minute. I have my faves and loyalties but I never have time to check out new blogs which is terrible. I mean to pencil it in soon!

    • But you write interesting content Jackie. You probably only started blogging to promote your book as I did . I just got caught up in the blogging world a bit more or it caught me! Lol! ~Elle

      • Thanks, Elle. I’m curious, when when do you write your novels? Or has the enjoyment of blogging taken over?
That’s been my conflict. I had to cut back to once or twice a week on blog about a year ago because I was just treading water with the novel…

        • It’s hard with working and trying to write and blogging. I fit it in wherever there’s a chunk of time but it’s a little easier because I work from home. 2 weeks ago I was editing my sequel to Crossing The Line and lost all my content on my flash drive! It’s there. I just can’t get it to open! I tried to be calm and now it’s hitting me. I’m devastated! I’m having to start from scratch. I think I may have the first half in emails I sent though. Afraid to look. So I started my Alaska book I’ve wanted to write from my mothers letters and journal. This I love, but I have to get that sequel going again because I promised! Are you writing a new book? Blog about it! I’m sure your readers will be glad to hear updates! Nice hearing from you! ~ Elle

          • I had to sit down and calm my beating heart as I read about your flash drive…I truly hope you can salvage something as that is my biggest fear. I am writing my second. It’s slow going. But I’m putting my arse on the chair and pushing on. Maybe I will blog about it, Just don’t want to lift the lid on the coffee jar and all the lovely smell gets out 🙂

  14. I try and always comment back on someone’s post who has commented on mine. I’m terrible about the social media thing on the weekends and it definitely shows on my analytics.

  19. These are great comments and I do agree with the one about replying to comments asap (like you I often forget what it is they are replying to!). However, I do try and be strict about not being on my phone ALL the time when I am with the children so there will be times when I don’t reply as quickly as I would like, especially at weekends. And we’re off for two weeks holiday soon – I won’t be replying much at all then 🙂
