I never thought the day would come when I would miss CNN, Fox News, and even The Weather Channel, but that day has come.
When I opened my paper this morning this article caught my eye.
6 Hurt As Tornado Damages Alabama Wal-Mart
I had talked to Andrew Friday morning and he never mentioned a tornado! He attends Troy University in Troy, Alabama, lives in Troy, Alabama, and is in the middle of the ‘Sound of The South’ band camp in Troy, Alabama at this moment. I would think a tornado going through town would be an important piece of information to mention to your mother. Don’t you?
Since H got his new smart TV 3 months ago and we dropped our local cable provider to hook up to Direct TV with a gazillion channels to choose from, you would think we would be well informed of the latest news events.
The problem is we aren’t as smart as that TV is. H had all those news and weather channels memorized with our local cable provider. Now with so much to choose from he gets interested in a movie and forgets he is searching for news.
Every channel has a three number code instead of the usual two, so that adds to the confusion of memorizing the numbers.
I can’t blame it all on him though. I can’t find HGTV or TCM when I’m searching and have to rely on the paper guide we have.
Jessie and Davey tried to teach us how to record programs and save them while they were here. You noticed that word ‘tried’ up there didn’t you? I guess if it’s not playing at the time we sit down we won’t be watching.
I did figure out how to get to Netflix last week. Now I can finish watching Grey’s Anatomy – when I find time.
There is so much content to choose from and so little time. Missing the news programs was not what I expected to happen.
Now I must go send multiple texts to my son to get some tornado information. He could have been swept away with the storm and ended up in OZ for all I know.

I hope your son is okay, Elle! As a college kid, I try not to worry my parents too much while I’m away, so maybe that’s what happened.
I guess that as technology advances, sometimes we lose our grip on reality, we disconnect. (I’ll admit I laughed a bit with your experience with cable. Reminds me of my parents 😂)

I’m sure he will call sometime today and I’m really not worried. He would have let me know if there was something to worry about. Maybe he can come home and help us with that direct TV to make up for it? ~Elle

Haha that sounds like a great idea 😂

I think it’s admirable Andrew didn’t panic. Wonder who he gets that formidable trait from 🙂

His mother of course! Haha!

Remember, college kids call home to talk about money – not the weather. At least that is what mine did. On the TV thing, there is an app for that. I keep TV Guide App on my phone updated to our location. I can search for show name, channel call letters or specific genre. Works for me.

Good idea Jerry. I’ll have to get that app. There’s just so much content though! On college kids – you are right. He is getting a little better at communicating though. Just not about tornado’s! ~Elle

well, if you’ve not heard from him yet – do that – its better than worrying!

I’m guessing he’s fine, Elle – just too engrossed in his activities to notice a tornado! But sometimes, yes, news would be welcome, from whatever source. Hoping you get that reassurance soon.

I’m not too worried Curtis. I saw a few things on Facebook and apparently SOTS kept on marching during their evening rehearsal! Lol! ~Elle

Hope you’ve heard from him by now! I hate to complain about all the technology that puts info at our fingertips – but I’m with you regarding the frustrations that come with it!

It has curbed our appetite for TV that’s for sure! No news from the kid. Surely someone would have contacted me if there was anything to tell. At least that is what I keep telling myself Shel. ~Elle

Nope! It’s been a day of phone tag. Probably when I shut my eyes tonight he will call. That’s how it works with kids! ~Elle

Given cable prices, and bad service, we’ve been considering a change. However, after reading how complicated Direct TV can be (and me being so technologically challenged to begin with), maybe we better not. Anyway Elle, Andrew probably didn’t want to worry you with talk about a tornado. He’s probably fine.

Yes, he just likes to worry me with talk about money – him needing more of it! ~Elle

Ah yes, the request for more money. Perhaps the scariest of all request any person can experience…especially a parent. 😀

He probably didn’t even know about it! He lives on the other side of town from Wal-Mart and we have played phone tag today. He’s a busy busy guy! ~Elle

Wouldn’t there be an air raid siren or something to go off when they’re supposed to go to shelter. He can’t be that busy. I get cell phone alerts for thunderstorms and amber alerts. So he must get something as well

I think it was so quick there was no time. I’m sure it wasn’t as bad as the paper made it seem. Troy is a really small town with a great college!

You’ll have to sort out different “guide” groups so that all the news and weather are together, all home improvement together all cooking and so on. It will take a couple of hours but you’ll never loose them again.

Oh my goodness! That really sounds confusing Trudy. Maybe I can pay someone to do that for me. Haha ~Elle

No no just do it slowly, there’s no rush and you won’t be graded. Lol. That’s the only way I know to make the channels you want to be gathered together
