Saint Nicholas, Father Christmas, Kris Kringle, Santa Clause – They are all one in the same and if you believe in him and don’t question his identity he will come. At least that is what I have always told my children. Don’t ask – we won’t tell. The four girls have succumbed to my wishes, making Christmas and the magic of Santa a reality. They have never actually questioned the enchantment of gifts appearing magically under the tree each year – not to me anyway – and they are all grown, married, and have children of their own now. It’s their turn to make Santa a reality for their little ones.
Now Andrew is another story. It must be a guy thing. He questioned Santa’s existence early and since he was the baby of the family it was important to us for him to believe each year even more. After all, it gave us something to plan for, something to enjoy when seeing the sparkle in his eyes with the wonder of it all.
He wasn’t having any of it though, and the more we pushed for him to keep quiet, the more he pushed for the truth. The more we turned a deaf ear, the more he questioned. The roll of his eyes each year with sarcasm attached as we exclaimed, “Look what Santa brought you. Open it. Let’s see what he got you,” was not the response we had strived for.
Well, he’s twenty-one now. Santa is still a reality to us – we still insist – he still balks. One day he will have a family of his own and will understand.
“What is Santa bringing you this year Andrew?” I’ll never tell! 🙂
