Some time last month H announced the fact he needed a new shoelace for his hunting boots. One lace was tied back together and laced back through the eyelets making it a good bit shorter than the other. He even stretched one out across the coffee table and had me measure it in preparation to buy new ones. At least that’s what I thought.
I know these boots are thirty years old. I kid you not. They are well-worn, waterproof, (or were at one time) and absent of much grip on the soles. They had to be some kind of comfortable because about six or seven years ago we bought Andrew a new pair of hunting boots and when he realized he had finally grown into his Dad’s boots he handed the new pair over to H and confiscated his Dad’s old ones.
Every time they hunted Andrew wore those old boots and H wore the new ones. When Andrew went off to college and H had to hunt without him he would revert back to the old boots and the new ones would sit in the closet. Those old boots have been around. They both have better, but these are the pair they like. Maybe they are lucky boots. I don’t know.
Now shoe laces are not something you think to buy when at the store as you would milk or bread. Shoelaces had to be written down on the list and the list brought into the store with you. I know we both made plenty of trips to Wal-Mart and neither of us ever thought to buy those laces. Now that hunting season is over, what’s the hurry?
So guess what! We were together in the store on Saturday and H said, “I have to get those laces for my boots. Neither one of us could remember the measurement at the time. We took a wild guess and bought seventy inch laces – after H examined the package thoroughly. He wasn’t sure if there was one or two laces in that package.
“Of course there are two laces. That’s how shoe laces are sold – in a pair! See right here it says one pair.” I finally convinced him of that fact. Later that evening he pulled out the boots and removed the old, tired, frayed lace and replaced it with the new one. Then he closed up the package and told me to put the other one up where he could find it.
“What? You aren’t putting it in the other boot.”
“No. The other lace is fine. I only needed one.”
Really? Is it just me or do most people replace both laces when they buy new shoelaces?
“You can’t just replace one,” I told him. It’s just not done! They have to match. Put the other new lace in!”
He didn’t and I think he hid it from me because I can’t find it. I WAS going to replace it myself when he left the house for work today. I hope that lace breaks on him at some inopportune moment and then he will be sorry he didn’t listen to me. I know I’m right!

Shoe strings were meant to be replaced in pairs. Worn laces are frequently stretched, giving uneven lengths. This frustrates me immensely.
It is good to know that I am not the only one who makes lists and then leaves them at home.

Cracked me up – a conversation that COULD have taken place at my house. And my husband would have been totally on to me, too, about just doing it when he wasn’t around! Btw – these days I even have to put ‘milk’ and ‘bread’ on the list if I actually expect to remember to buy them!

Your post prompted me to write a post. First I need to make a trip to WalMart for a few photos. BTW, I replace laces in pairs but keep the unbroken one just for emergencies. 🙂
