Dress, Shoes, Slip…..And Time!

Dress, Shoes, Slip…..And Time!

Sometimes you get into a situation where you just have to say no. I don’t do as many alterations as I used to and this could very well be the reason why.

Voice on phone – “Hi. How are you? My name’s Megan and I need to have my wedding gown altered. Cherie told me to give you a call – you remember her don’t you? Short, red hair, talks a lot – heehee!  Can you work me in?”

Me –  (I really didn’t recall Cherie, but gosh she seems perky.)  “Of course I remember her Megan. (with fingers crossed behind my back) When is your wedding?”

Megan – “Two months.  How long will it take you because I’d like to have it as soon as possible. I have pictures scheduled in six weeks. Cherie said you were quick.”

Me –  (Oh goodness! Here is one that has no idea it takes time for these things.)  “That’s a little tight, but I could probably manage it. Do you have your shoes yet?” (Even Andrew knows you need to have your shoes to hem a dress! You can read about that here.)

Megan – “Not yet, but I’m looking. I found a pair I really loved last week when my cousin went shopping with me.  Wow! They were the perfect shoes for my dress. Beth – that’s my cousin and she’s my maid of honor –  didn’t like them though, so I’m still looking. I’m not sure why Beth didn’t like them. I believe she’s just jealous because I’m getting married before her. She’s older than me – by six months and thinks she should marry first. Can you believe that?  She doesn’t even have a boyfriend!”

Me – (thinking we are getting a little off track here – I don’t need to know your family history – just get your #^%* shoes!) “Megan, you need to have your shoes for me to hem your dress. You need to have the ones you will be wearing. Now, what alterations do you need done to your gown?”

Megan – (I could tell she was getting in a hurry at this point.) “I need a hem and a bustle for sure and it’s a little tight but I don’t want you to let it out because I’m going to lose some weight You can let it out a few days before the wedding if I don’t I’m going to borrow a slip from my friend Ally if she’ll let me Do I need to have it for the alterations because I don’t know if I can get it that quick or not Also can you alter my bridesmaids gowns too There are eight of them They live close but two of them are out of the country and won’t be in town until two days before the wedding.” (The punctuation is missing because she didn’t pause long enough for me to put that in!)

Me – “Uh, Megan. (I had to stop her before she passed out.) I just remembered. I’m going to be out of the country!”    Leaving now!

Now this bride intended to lose heaven knows how many pounds to be able to fit into her gown in two months. Sure. Right. I’ve heard that story before. And yes she did need those shoes and that slip for the alterations. Her bridesmaids? Two of them won’t be around until two days before the wedding? Was she expecting them to move in with me and sleep on a cot while I sewed for two days straight? Not gonna happen!

  7. I’m so impressed you can sew like that. Such a lost art. That little lady sounds like a little air head but maybe it’s just nerves.

Loved when you said, even H knows you need to have shoes.

    Funny!

  8. Oh my! Thank goodness you passed on that one because there were sure to be loads of problems pleasing that bride. I recently took care of a new mom who also is a wedding planner. She was trying to learn how to breastfeed her newborn while answering emails from a bride who just couldn’t comprehend her wedding planner had more important things going on than trying to get the table linens to match the bridesmaid’s gowns. Geez!
